I need a bit of help.
First off, what does a torrent tracker do? I have a PHP version of one... but I don't quite understand what a torrent tracker is.. so..
Secondly, how do I make my own .torrents? Can any file be a torrent? |

Youre looking for Bittorrent.
I even have a shirt with it on =D
Im not 100% sure on the technical side of it, but essentially torrents are files with infomation on the actual files and their various hashes to be identified. The tracker keeps track of all the people who have the files for this torrent, and the IPs of the seeds (Full versions of the files) and peers (Other people downloading the files) and when a new person downloads/resumes, the tracker tells them who has what of the file, and you can make simultainious connections to get the pieces you need, or if there is a seed available, get the whole thing. _________________

I dont see any Tracker Mahel Just a bunch of links leading "to Trackers" and a search engine that searches a public database What Tracker are you running ??? ::: Arctic; A tracker is a computer and place on the web where people can download the .torrent files and see Torrent stats like seeds leechers total completetions do you need a tracker or want one ? because you can use other trackers ie: http://www.thepiratebay.org or http://www.mininova.org or http://www.torrentsearch.com or http://www.torrentreactor.to to name a few to upload your torrents and after youve seeded a while your done and its up to sharers to keep the torrent alive. if you must run a tracker i suggest BNBT Easy Tracker http://bnbteasytracker.sourceforge.net/ it runs its own web page on port 6969 so you dont need to incorporate it into your web site just link to it from your site ie www.youraddress.org:6969 will be the Tracker address make sure you read the Install documentation about the DEFAULT ADMIN username and password as you have to log in and delete the default admin an create a new admin (yourself presumably) as soon as your tracker starts up the first time also you can use python and the bittorrent source code to run a "python" tracker as a service like i did http://alienseed.serveftp.org:6969 see info and files needed http://mywebpages.comcast.net/a.west/tracker_howto.htm how ever this can be complicated if you dont know much about bittorrent or python and bnbt easytracker is per configured to allow user signup, torrent uploads, and comment posting Note you can disable these features to make your tracker public or private |
