PunBB http://www.punbb.com is also another good and clean free BB. It was designed to be compact and to produce small HTML files. So do not expect to have all the bells and whistles commonly found in PhpBB and other "pro" forums.

You can also find many other free BB scripts and test them without installing them on your computer in http://www.opensourcecms.com .

Probably THE WORST bulletin board I have ever seen, it's so ugly IMHO. I would hate to work with something so terrible. It is highly costly, and you have to pay $160 for the neverending license, but that is a ripoff anyways, and the lesser license for year must be bought yearly. Don't get it. I think it needs MySQL, I'm not sure.

I disagree on your opinion, I have used vBulletin and it works beautifly. And the admin panel is incrediable. Its so advanced that it has schuldeled tasks for itself to do. I can give you a 'demo' version you can try out on your own computer. And although, the default theme that comes with vBulletin is the most piece of crap ever. The themes that other people mark are...wow....freakin incrediable. Although, it is pricey its worth every cent. And it needs MySQL.

On the brighter side: Someone used to host vBulletin forums because in his license it said he could host unlimited forums so he gave away hosting for it.

This is the most advanced of it`s kind. But you need to learn how to work with it. You can not compare this to phpbb. I also dont understand when one has to pay for a product, it is a ripoff? Why>?

Personaly i can not agree with you on this point :)

It needs sql yes.....and a *lot* of server space [sql]

Its a ripoff for the people who want something clean and fast. If your looking for advanced /complicated stuff then go with vBulletin. Otherwise go with phpBB if you want something easy to understand. vBulletin wasnt aimed at new users it was made for the advanced users who are looking for power.

And "when one has to pay for a product?" uhh.. I think I know whos going to be pirating Abyss Pro as soon as he can....

My two cents. :)

There is a version of phpbb which has been modified and is also free:

http://support.phpbbfm.net/index_fm.php

or you can have php nuke, the latest version is 7.7 and costs $10 @ http://www.phpnuke.org

you can get older visions of php nuke which are free @ http://www.nukecops.com

phpbb is cool i guess since it is sorta like a balnk canvas, and you can modify it however you please

only quip i have about it is after you get down adding all those modifications, it starts to get harder and harder to update ((they have frequent updates too)) and it gets harder to maintain, as security fixs and other mods tend to cause problems etc and so on

databases make moving forum info around alot easier, like i messed up a phpbb install and was able to move all the database files to a new install

plus the database isnt specificly forum only, you can get alot of other programs on it as well
