Does ISP prohibbit having a webserver? I have Frontier's ADSL service and I am confussed. Their e-mail says.

http://home.frontiernet.net/technicalsupport/security/acceptable.asp

Servers and Proxies

Users may not run on Frontier servers any program which makes a service
or resource available to others, including but not limited to port
redirectors, proxy servers, chat servers, MUDs, file servers, and IRC
bots. Users may not run such programs on their own machines to make
such services or resources available to others through a Frontier
dialup account; a dedicated access account is required for such
purposes.

Customers are responsible for the security of their own networks and
machines. Frontier will assume neither responsibility nor
accountability for failures or breach of customer-imposed protective
measures, whether implied or actual. Abuse that occurs as a result of a
compromised customer's system or account may result in suspension of
services or account access by Frontier, for example, if a system is
abused after becoming infected with Back Orifice or the NetBus Trojan
Horse programs as a result of an Internet download or executing an
email attachment. (Read more about the Back Orifice program.)

Any programs, scripts, or processes which generate excessive server
load on Frontier servers are prohibited and Frontier reserves the right
to terminate or suspend any such program, script, or process.

According to our (limited) understanding of legal terms, they only allow the use of client application using their ADSL. They do not grant you the right to host a server on your computer while using their ADSL connection.
But the better is to ask them directly.

im just wondering why broadband isps have such a problem with webservers. my site is only used my friends and family i maybe get 20 hits a month and for some reason charter has informed me that running a webserver is against their acceptable use policy.

anyone know why? a webserver doesnt use much bandwith and mine sure as heck dont use much bandwith.

its mostly legal reasons that they own the ip you have and since they cant look at every single web page for things they dont want they just want you to not host it on your comp and put it on thier servers so they can admin it easier. that way if you put up something bad and someone complain to the ip owner then they can say you wernt suposed to be doing it

As for you, you were just unlucky enough to get noticed. most big isps have too many clients to care or look (one support tech even to me how to get a dynamic ip name).

if you have a very busy webserver they dont like it as it is a constant high volume of traffic, and especially for cable connections this can affect other's service in your area. If your webserver isn't very busy, you might be ok hosting your server on your pc, as it is very unlikely the isp will pick up on it, or if they do, its unlikely they will mind as much.
