Firstly let me congratulate Abyss on a first class system, have been running Abyss for some time now and it has proved to be easy to use, stable and has not allowing a single hacker in.

Now on the subject of anti hack, would it be legal to run a program that shut down the remote user when they accessed it, and if so can anyone recommend one. I regularly have hacking attempts looking for system files and whilst Abyss keeps them out (unlike some other servers) I would like to get through to the hackers that this is a no-no.

Seriously , its most likely IIS worm scans and it cannot harm the server but
adding such a feature to manually block IP's instead of banning them could
help out alot but for the most part you should be safe from hackers.

Sorry posted this in the wrong place, should have been in off topic. Another thought would be for a program that gave them a friendly message letting them know that their machine was infected.

A firewall will hep you no ens as will a NAT/Router.

people dont understand that on broadband/narrowband or what ever connection you have that always on, even if you dont use the internet, your machine is always connected, visible and vunerable IF you dont run the minimum of a software firewall.

Not all firewalls are equal, whilst most monitor vigorusly the lower ports, allot of them from port 40,000 and above donot monitor or block traffic. Only a few of the top firewalls will give 100% coverage.

To beef up security, you an add a router, this will only allow connections IF a port is opened (broadcast) or forwarded (routed) to a machine. you only need to concern yourself with routed traffic. But the added benefit of addin a router is it offloads allot of work done by your PC and those free CPU cycles can be put to good use in serving up and not dealing with net junk.

Dont rely on XP firewall, a few hours on the internet in the righ forums will tell you as much, despite the suposid sp2 beef up in security, IM still hearing that its not as beefy as they make out, more like Bovril infact.
