block direct linking

I wanna block people from directly linking to images in my "images" folder....can this be done.....I have restricted the directory....asks for password and all that.........but if you go straight to a file it does not....

ie....link to http://mysite.com/images/
would ask for a password....but

http://mysite.com/images/somepic.jpg
will not ask.....

can this be blocked? a setting...? if not...anyone know of a PHP or CGI that can do this?

Hello erislon--

Are you using Abyss's password protection? The Access control? The behavior you describe should not be happening. Access control should prompt for username and password at and inside any directory you protect.

I think this sounds more like a Anti-Leech type of issue , you don't want any
one to directly link to your images from their website , you would need to try
the beta version of Abyss Web Server to do this , Have A Nice Day...

Note: www.aprelium.com uses the Beta of Abyss Web Server that can be
found in the Beta 2.0 forum , please try it out and see if you like it.

Take a look at http://abyssws.cjb.net for a easy to follow tutorial , their is
a new parameter added to v2.0.0.18 that allows you to add allowed hosts.

Please re-read my first response to your post. If you want to password protect the "images" directory you can do this through Abyss's Access Control settings and User and Groups settings.

the anti-leeching option in the new beta allows you to set hosts that can link to the folder, and prevent requests with no referrer header. this is probably more of what you need.

just use common or garden variety CGI, something that will process all URL with any cgi information.

Then you can move all data, invalidate a CGI value and allsorts of other things.

It would be the simplest soloution for you.

Even simpler would be NOT to put anything up on the net that you dont want stolen. That is the nature of the internet, if you put something up, someone will steal it, link to it or copy your site because they have no imagination and cant come up with something original.

Other things you can do to make your artwork less attractive is to introduce water marks, lower quality pictures and small sizes as well.

Use of no-right click scripts... Save yourself the bother because usiing them only alienates the visitor from your site, allot of people that brows allot have right click options that they have embedded themselves to make navigation and use of the web easier, if you add a no-right click script, you will be alienating something in the order of 21% of internet users as quoted on one of the many web developer sites I visit.

It also is easily got around by using another browser like firefox. So its pointless as I pointed out to a website by emailing them the entire content of their no-right click protected website. Not heard anything from them yet...
