I've decided to try and run a server at home to store thousands of mp3 files that can be accessed through a website on a home network. I've got the links working and everything is accessible through the network. The problem I have is that the mp3 files show as a list and can only be played one by one. Is it possible to get abyss to open up the files showing icons that can be played in media player from the play all button. Any help greatly appreciated.

Whirlpoolspecialist, have you tried using M3U files as a playlist to add all the other files ?

Not sure what M3U files are. It I save the website in frontpage using frames and preview in browser the links for any given album show as icons within the windows media interface and the choice is ther to play one track or all. If I can get this to work somehow on abyss i can clear loads of space by putting all the cds in the loft and myself and the kids will have access to all the music. What is the M3U all about?
Thanks

Everytime I have used .m3u files to store play lists, they never work properly, I have had more success using .pls lists, especially when playing over a network.

WhirlpoolSpecialist,

There is a script called Andromeda that does all this for you (it prepares playlists of MP3 files and handles everything through the web server.)
But as far as we know, the M3u or Pls files should contain full URLs of the files in order to run correctly when the MP3 files are hosted on the web server.

Thanks for the info, it seems that a play list and M3u files may be the way to go. Can somebody please advise me of the best way to do this. I spent hours and hours getting all the tracks from my cd's to wma files so I'm not bothered if its going to be a long tast to set up for each album, I just haven't got a clue how to do it. Any help gr4eatly appreciated.

Whirlpool,

Another alternative is to run a copy of Winamp with a plugin from JetAudio.

This will allow you to run Winamp as a broadcast server, you then run another winamp on the remote and stuff in your server IP:port and and the winamp remote will connect to the winamp server and your audio can be heard, very minimal delay unlike shoutcast where you can have upto 1 minute delay, this system has low latency and difference can be a few seconds at most, in my tests their was about a 4 second delay but if your listening in another part of your home, it wont be an issue.

Configuring the jet audio server is real easy and is not as complex as it may first appear, I set mine up without looking at any help file, thats just how easy it is.

You will have to ensure that you make sure that your settings are not publically available as like with most broadcast servers, they are set to contact a remote server to alert visitors to the jet audio site that you exist, unless you want to do public broadcasts, turn this feature off.

When your MP3's are in the play list window of the winamp server, save the play list as this will make your life easier and then you can start to play, hit the broadcast button on the jet audio interface and then play your MP3's, the server will be broadcasting, all you need to do is iron out any settings you have missed or made in error.
