I use my server to host my site, my friends sites and also to make sharing files with people easier.

A bunch of people has their websites at my server, here's a little shameless site-promotion:

Montezumas homepage, a very talented rock'n'roll-band (feel free to download some of their music from the "Musik"-section of the webpage). In swedish.
Drunoks Drängar, a english/swedish site about roleplaying games (the pen & paper-kind, not crpgs).
Nemisis Ruinerna, a personal website with a lot of rpg-material. Also swedish.

Since the sites aren't mine, I figure it's ok to promote them. ;)

in response to the hacked thing. umm a firewall wil block most things BUT you need more protectioin than just that...
here is what i have done:
hardware based firewall a the top of my network
have mcafee, zone alarm(free version lol), and a free firewall that came with my asus motherboard when i bought it.
snort ids

thats all for my windows box, i have an even sweeter setup on my linux box email me if u want details.

as far as i am concerned you canget more security on linux or unix. a lot of the security software for them are also free :D , which is better than paying $100 for mcafee. my reccomandation is dont host on windows. the server will be considerably slower on windows and (im assuming you will have apache, mysql, php) it will save you a LOT of time configuring and managing them.

I had zone alarm, had problems, issues. So I had to go to Sygate(after the hacked). Maybe also I can blame windows 98 *kicks comp*

That depends. Many don't want the hassle of configuring a linux server. And if you're a bit smart, install all the servicepacks, patches and has some sort of firewall...most problems are prevented.
For personal hosting, that is.

I use my server for a variety of things.

So far, I have had 0 successful hacks on my server. I use a Linksys router with Port 80 forwarded; Norton Internet Security 2003; and a pached-up version of Windows XP Pro.

About the Service Packs: Essentially, a Service Pack is a load of patches rolled up into one. If you can download the patches, then you can probably download the Service Packs. If you can't download the Service Packs, then your operating system is as good as worthless.

I don't know how that ended up in this thread, but that doesn't sound like a server to me. (More of an "almost-gaming" machine).

Yes i do game on it a LOT but I find it still powerful enough to handle a server.

The 3 harddrives task was pretty hard. I had to modify the instrustions on building a harddrive switch to fit 3 ... its great though I would have hated to have to partition and crap.

Well I wouldn't game and serve a website at the same time (especially if you are doing online gaming).

I think i have more than enough power to handle both at the same time, my games do not lag, and my server does not have any noticable difference.

Well I am heading out to go buy more RAM now lol. I will get 1GB and its not going to be cheap.. I've earned a little treat for myself :D $700 of RAMy goodness lol.

I had to work 2 1/2 months to get that much money lol, but im only 14.

I was mostly referring to the internet connection when it comes to doing both.

Oh, and $700 for 1GB of ram? I don't know where you're getting ripped off, but http://www.tigerdirect.com should give you a better price.
