I'm using Abyss v1.1 RC1 so I can use SSI, but I can't. What am I doing wrong? My system is running Win98 SE. Will I need to setup any extra software and if so what?

By default, the server will process .shtml files as SSI files. Just for test purposes, you can create a file named test.shtml in your htdocs/ folder and copy the following lines in it:
Code:

<HTML>
<BODY>
Local time is: <B><!-- #echo var="DATE_LOCAL" --></B>
</BODY>
</HTML>

Then go to your browser and browse http://127.0.0.1/test.shtml .
If it is still not working, open your console and go to SSI parameters. Check that SSI processing is enable and that shtml is in the list of SSI associated instructions.

For more information about SSI, read the related chapter in the documentation of the web server.

How stupid of me not to try a basic .shtml document first - many apologies for wasting your time.

All I was trying to do was to include a file. The problem was that I got my file extensions the wrong way round - trying to include an .shtml file in a .html file and not a .html file in an .shtml file. I wouldn't mind, but I've used #include before - you think I would've remembered.

Once again many thanks.

PS. This is an absolutely fantastic program. I've been searching for this for years. Keep up the good work.

Now about ASP...

Thank you and please do not be sorry. This is our job to provide tech. support.
For ASP, read http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/asp.html .
