comacast capped upload speed i now only get 124 kbps!
and im still paying them the same $59 a month...
I know im not really supposed to run a server with comcast but, man, 124kbs that would mean if someone was viewing my webcam it wouldnt leave enough upload bandwidth to surf and ack webpages...right?
my only other option is to updgrade to a business package and pay business prices...i hate monopolies |

I have comcast and I'm only getting 30kbs upload. My friend down the street gets about the same, and my friend on the other side of town gets a little less. Are you guys uncapping your modems? I'm pretty sure there is a way to switch the upload and download bandwidths if that helps at all... I hate monopolies but most people in Congress are getting there cut, so what are we going to do? |

good question... even the consumer advocate groups are in the cut.
I dont know why one year they go after microsoft then the next let every communication company become one ..or every bank also....
so maybe if we get enough people (being america and all) we can scrape up alot of money for campaign contributions and buy back our freedom of choice.

I'm in Ontario on Rogers Hi-Speed and my upload speed is restricted to 24kilobytes/second .. but my webpages still load at a decent speed and they dont block ports
My download speed is decent though .. I have scored 2.8 and 2.9 Mbits at bandwidthplace before ... |

I use ATG (for those of you in California, Oregon, and Washington), and I get 2400 down and 768 up for $40 a month. Sounds hard to believe, but mainly because they are a small company; so they need to compete somehow.... _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Do you have a link to their site ?
All I can find with google is http://www.atginternet.com/dsl.php which can't be the same company - max upload is 384kbps and the prices are way off $40... |

I live in Washington we have no other cable than comcast and no other phone company besided verizon, And they are both monopolies if ya ask me I either pay an arm and a leg for cable internet or pay less and have horrible dsl. Man I would give anything for Time Warner over here they were so much better.

Internet companies have been screwing us for years.
For those of you who want the link to ATG, it is www.callatg.com
ATGInternet is a different company than Advanced TelCom Group (which is the one I'm talking about). _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I spent the better part of last week looking for an alternative to comcast. My comcast service is terrible. I have no connection for at least 10 minutes evry hour. It took me 10 minute to get to the second page of this thread so i could post a reply. The speed is good 247up 2800 down, but i don't care about download. I want it to be fast to people visiting my sites.
For those that live in south Denver Colorado check out http://suburbanbroadband.com 800kbps up and down $64.99 month. I live in north denver so my best option is earthlink dsl 768sdsl @ $289 month + $225 install + $290 equipment purchase.
I am very open to suggestions.
Please Help :( |

$289/mo?? That is crazy! I just now noticed it was "SDSL," but that is still way too pricey.
I think if you haven't already found something, then Comcast is your best bet. You can always try satellite internet; I don't know the speeds on that (however there is a 1.3 second delay, so it isn't good for playing online multiplayer games). _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I don't know what the prob is.
Does anyone know what a dos (disruption of service) attack is and if that could be the problem. Maybe comcast has put a cap on my bandwidth due to the fact that i'm running a server.
any thoughts?
I can get dsl for $30 a month but they don't allow servers. and yahoo service isn't available here.
Last i checked sattelite was about 56k upload. |

DoS (Denial of Service) is when one person bombards a server with hundreds and thousands of requests in hope to take the server down. This is probably not the issue, after all, Comcast has hundreds of redundant servers.
Comcast does not cap your speed just because you run a server; in fact, they probably don't even know (because it violates the TOS).
Why does Comcast cap speeds?
Simple: Marketing. Comcast is allotted a certain bandwith (by their parent ISP who's name I forget at the moment) to distribute amongst their users. If they were to let you mooch as much bandwidth as you could suck, there wouldn't be as much for the other users. However, if they allot each node (I'll explain about a node if you don't know; just ask) a certain amount of bandwidth. In doing this, they can guarantee speeds such as "Up to 1.5Mbps" which is what they currently advertise. If each user gets relatively fast speeds, they will recommend Comcast to their friends, thus Comcast gets more money.
Also, if I remember correctly, Comcast will give you more bandwidth for (obviously) more money. If they cap your bandwidth in the first place, they are able to offer a premium service. That is the same philosophy that all xDSL companies follow: pay more money, get more bandwidth. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Cap that losers? You must remember that Cable is a lot different than DSL when it comes to speed. With cable, you get UP TO [insert bandwidth here]. If there are a lot of people connected to your node, then speeds can be crap. With DSL, you get a predefined amount that only you get to use. I downloaded a little app that lopped on an entire 1.5Mbps onto my total speed (called TCP Optimizer).
Besides, I sure hope there is more in Colorado than just decent internet speeds. (Don't get me wrong; I am a die-hard South Park fan). _________________ Bienvenidos! |

a T1 is $525 a month. don't know what that is in euro, but in U.S. it's a pretty good chunk of change. Too much for a novice to pay. |
