i have setup a test download but it dont work properly when a user clicks on the disk icon it takes them to a directory listing instead of downloading the file straight away if i turn directory indexing off on my webserver it says you are not authorized to view this page how can i make it so files can be downloaded?

Is the file linked directly or does it read something like this:
http://192.168.123.143/downloads

or something like this:
http://192.168.123.143/downloads/abyss.exe
