Alright I've started a new site yesterday and this is my first time using abyss. For some reason I can view my site at home but I can't view it from other areas. Here's the link to my site http://192.168.0.190/index.html When I try view it here it says the page cannot be displayed. Someone mentioned something about Static IP to me and dynamic IP and I don't know what that is about. He said something about using some software. Can any1 help me out and get my site working?

The IP you've posted is a private LAN IP - you will not be able to access it from anywhere outside your LAN. Use http://www.aprelium.com/ip/ to find out the IP you are connecting from.

You need to explain a bit more about your configuration - are you just using a modem/router + your PC, do you have a small home network, what OS are you running etc ?

Ahh, here you are codsterz. (I was the one to tell him)

Well, supposably someone else pointed him to an ip 'telling' site and he came back with that, not knowing if it was actually a lan ip or not i gave him the ip he ahs now. I don't think he really knows how to see if he has a dynamic or static, or if he has a router or network.

You said something about Charter being unable to host severs so I'm am I going to have to switch to a new company that provides high speed internet. Currently I'm running on Windows Xp but I have the firewall disabled. My internet connection is being split bewtween 2 pc's. The siteworks on both of those PC's but no where else.

IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION, YOU CANNOT HOST A WIDE AREA NETWORK.

you'll need to upgrade to windows xp PROFESSIONAL series if you want to host this type of network.

static/dynamic IP's.....sorry, there is no way around this, no matter what application you install.

otherwise, if you arent using WIN XP HOME EDITION, youre in luck.

If you're just going to spam every post with FUD about XP Home could you please disappear to whatever troll hole you crawled out of ? Ta.

Codesterz, could you please check your IP with the Aprelium checker and answer my other questions if you want more help... If your ISP is blocking port 80 all you need to do is change Abyss to a different port, you don't need to switch ISPs unless you specifically want to be able to serve up your site without appending a port number to the url, e.g. www.mysite.com:9421

Bad, anony is right.

you aren't supplying to this post nor are you helping anyone by complaining that home "can't" host sites (I use to have home, and it did.).

And yes, Charter communications specifically says they do not allow servers of any type on their connections. "Violating" this policy will result in termination of service or something else, or forget.

You know, crap like that.

nono...:)

my FIRST post wasnt intended to be a complaint about "WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION!" not allowing developers to set up servers and connecting to a wide area network. yes, i too have set up a network(intranet) at home with WIN XP H.E. and succesfully executed php, asp interpreters etc... and hosted a dumb LAN party for gaming/OS testing purposes.

you might be able to hack WIN XP H.E. and modify files so that you can install IIS, but there is no other way around this situation.

if you have WIN XP H.E., explain to these people who need help, in easy to follow step by step instructions, how to run a server over a wide area net using this particular OS. if you can prove me wrong, then....? :P good for you.

otherwise, just continue to help these folks set up their "local area nets."

This isn't an IIS forum - the people here are asking about Abyss webserver. You're giving the impression you think "IIS is a webserver, you can't run IIS on XP home therefore you can't run webservers on XP Home."

The steps to follow to install and run a site on Abyss with XP Home are the same as the steps to run it off Win 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 or XP Pro - just install Abyss, make sure your ISP doesn't block 80 and choose an alternative port if it does, set up port forwarding on your router if you're using one and make sure your firewall allows traffic to the web port. That's it.

you had planted the "IIS not installed on WIN XP H.E" back there...
the dirty bomb did the trick.

the steps you just gave are correct.......but you can't....forget it....
