Hi, I've installed abyss on a linux (gentoo) server and emerged (installed) first php 4.3.3r3 after that I tried 4.3.4 and 4.3.2 and have now installed 5.0_beta1 r1 and none of the versions have worked. All I get is an error 500. Using HTML works great.

what to do?

So you mean that only PHP files return error 500? If this is the case, the problem comes from PHP.
Open a terminal window, and at the shell prompt, type "php" or the full path to the php executable.
Is there an error? Does PHP work?

Error 500 is displayed when the server cannot run the interpreter or when it runs it but this latter fails to send the CGI headers correctly.

Usually, there is a path/shared library problem. If you still have the problem, please send us your abyss.conf file to support@aprelium.com and tell us more about your issue.
