If you use a router with port forwarding enabled, then simply disable the port that the webserver runs on.
Or install a firewall and you should be able to block access via specific ports.

It is my primary server - I've gone through a few others (Apache, Xitami, etc)

As far as I know to, you shouldn't have to CHMOD if your using the windows version. Not quite sure about the linux version though as I don't use it.

running it as a service means that it a) loads once OS is booted computer (no need for manual start) and b) runs regardless of whether or not you are logged in.

Abyss is only a web server. If you want to host games, then you will need to find a server program for that game (some games have them built in)

If your running windows, then you shouldn't have to if I remember rightly. Just place the needed files (and correct directory structure) into the htdocs in abyss installation directory.

I can personally vouch that the installer detects the older versions (well, it has for me anyways, and I've had to go between the 2 previous ones, due to windows rollback, several times)
